Grace Children’s Hospital was founded in 1967 in Port-au-Prince and is recognized as Haiti’s leading medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis (TB). The all Haitian, specially trained community health workers and volunteers care for thousands of children in the inpatient ward and outpatient clinics. Inpatient stays average three months during which time the children can also attend school. Both children and adults living in the slums around the hospital receive vaccinations, prenatal care, and other basic health services.
The earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, forever changed the nation of Haiti, and severely damaged the Grace Children's Hospital campus. The hospital has rebuilt transitional facilities that continue to serve the people of Haiti, with outreaches to the tent communities near the hospital. Even in the aftermath of the earthquake, hospital operations were only halted for a few days, and care for the children staying at the hospital never ceased.
As the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere, approximately 80% of Haitians live on less the $1 a day. Families receive all these services for a one-time fee of eight dollars, yet so many cannot afford even this much. Grace never turns a child or family away, regardless of ability to pay.
