The Festival of the Christian Home will be celebrated this Sunday, May 13th, as our culture celebrates Mother’s Day. Families come in all shapes and sizes. I grew up in a huge extended family of grandparents, great-grandmother, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and literally dozens of cousins, plus great and second or third, “this-and-thats.” They were old and young, teetotalers and alcoholics, church-goers and back-sliders, married and “spinsters or bachelors,” abused and abusers, management and workers, delightful and scary. But they were mine. We are all each others’.
Before President Obama’s statement of support yesterday for gay marriage, I had already entitled the reflection “Love Makes a Family.” It is what I believe, and I invite you to find within it a place to stand and give thanks for all those who have loved you into being (and all those you have loved!)
